First Friday Friars Presidents' Letter

May 2021

Greetings Brother Friars!

I trust your Lenten Season was grace-filled and reflective, and that you are looking forward to a new beginning of hope, prosperity, and health. The season of Easter has finished, and we are again reminded of the Resurrection of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and the promise of our salvation.

This past March, our meeting was another great success.  Mass was livestreamed from the large chapel at Santiago Spiritual Center, and conducted by our own Chaplain, Father Glenn Baaten. A gentle reminder to our viewers, for both Mass and our general meeting, is to please mute your speakers when not talking. Background noise is very distracting and disrespectful to our speakers. Thank you for your assistance.

Kudos again to our Brother Friar, Don Hunsberger, who has come up with excellent 2020-2021 Programs.

As a reminder to our viewing audience, Professor Rychlak’s book, Hitler, the War, and the Pope, and John O’Neill’s book, The Fisherman’s Tomb, have been purchased by the Friars for your personal reading. The books are free to Friars and are available for pickup from Friar John Aust’s office at 219 E. Chapman Ave, Orange (weekdays only).

Our March speaker was Shannon Ginter, the Manager of Special Events and Corporate Relations at Providence St. Joseph Hospital. In her role, she partners with high-level executives such as corporate CEOs and other top officials, community business leaders and major gift donors, to support the philanthropic goals and initiatives of Providence St. Joseph Hospital. After spending many years in the healthcare field working directly with patients, Shannon shifted into non-profit to make a broader impact, and has been with Providence St. Joseph Hospital for 13 years. Thus far, she has spent the bulk of her career planning universally recognized and creatively profitable events for the Hospital.

Providence St. Joseph Hospital’s Annual Golf Tournament was in the #3 spot in the Orange County Business Journal for 2019, and quickly jumped to #1 in 2020. After the onset of the pandemic, Providence St. Joseph Hospital was one of the only non-profits in the area to not only hold a non-virtual event, but instead reimagined the occasion into an exciting soirée, making the highly-anticipated, annual event a success.

Our May speaker will be Richard I. “Dick” Lyles, CEO of Origin Entertainment. In addition to his leadership, he brings extensive expertise in the areas of business, strategy, finance, and marketing to the team. Most recently, he served as producer on FATIMA starring Harvey Keitel, Sonia Braga and Goran Visnjic, and is an Executive Producer of IM/MORTAL. Lyles will serve either as a producer or executive producer on current and future Origin projects.

Lyles has served successfully as CEO of several companies in the past, led several start-ups, and is an experienced writer with a strong marketing and communication background. To date, he has authored nine books, including the best seller, Winning Ways, that have been translated into more than forty languages around the world.

During his three-year tenure as President of The Ken Blanchard Companies, he took the company from $20M to $42M in annual revenues while increasing profitability and expanding the company’s global reach. He has served successfully as CEO of several other companies including a strategic management consulting company and a thirty-three-station radio network.

Dick Lyles is one of the founding Board Members of Act One, Inc., in Hollywood. In addition, he has served as the lead faculty member for the Act One Executive program. Act One has trained more than 500 writers and 90 executives for Hollywood career.

With the approval of the Board of Directors, our Website Improvement Project Committee has completed their assignment with the selection and hiring of a new Webmaster, Lana Farfan.  Lana will be designing and building a new professional website that is more user-friendly and interactive, which also includes a social media presence. More to follow!  Thank you to Vice Chair, Hugh Lynch, John Aust, Bob Hengstebeck and Bill Flood for the time they committed to this important project.

I will continue to focus on the Mission Statement of our Catholic Men’s Organization, since our inception in 1959: Celebrating the Sacred Heart of Jesus, building friendships, and creating networking to expand contacts in the Catholic community.

Our group is only as strong as its membership. Our new website will go a long way in enabling you to ask other members of your parish to view, engage and join in fellowship with like-minded Catholic men. Invite a guest to the MAY meeting.

Please respond to me, either by email or cell phone, if you have any questions or comments.

Faithfully yours in Christ Jesus,

Gene Hernandez
